Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 – 11:40pm~
So, it’s Wednesday night and I receive a text message from Rob (Freeride Boardshop Kelowna) saying, “Uh oh…” with a picture of a small pile of snow that is, needless to say, definitely not enough to build a rail jam. YES, I freaked a little…
Thursday, October 6th, 2011 – 7:29am~
I called Rob. He told me not to worry but I knew he was just saying that so I wouldn’t worry. Trish (Moksha Yoga) kindly said to me on my way out, oh so sincerely, “I hope you have a really special day, Lauren.” What a great way to start the day.
YES. It’s a Rail Jam.
We did it. Mission Park Shopping Centre in the distance branded with a YES banner. And there was SNOW!
Five hours later mayhem began with SunFM’s Brian Mack representing Kelowna RIGHT. M&M meats had a BBQ set up; people were crowding the sidewalks; Carly had a raffle going; Hayley was doing rider registration; and guess who shows up: Kelowna’s honorary guests for the night DCP, Helen and Lucas to judge the comp and rock the house!! Great success at the Jam but definitely couldn’t have done anything without YES’ support so thank you!
YES. It’s a movie. & Twe12ve Double Feature Premiere at The Paramount Theatre downtown Kelowna. It was a movie. Actually two. But that’s not all. Janelle from Rugged Riders did a sick raffle for the ladies! On top of that, YES., Absinthe Films, Billabong, Anon, iFound and Solomon provided us with the RADICAL swag toss-outs to the crowd! The most talented hand-stander received a YES. snowboard. Thanks for that Dave and Justin!
YES. It’s a party. at Avenue Bar. Let me tell you! That place is pure class
It was a party. ‘Nuff said.

Thank you to Freeride for hosting the Rail Jam and everything in between! Rob, Nicole and Josh you guys are unbreakable. Thank you DCP, Helen Schettini, and Lucas Debari for guest judging and Leah for ticket sales. Thank you to all the Freeriders and friends who helped with the shoveling and construction of the Jam. Thank you to Carly & Janelle for your rad raffles. Thank you Brian and Kerry for making SunFM our musical and entertaining hub! Thank you Sharon for organizing all of this with all the shops of Mission Park Shopping Centre. Thank you Prospera for lending us your tent and garbage can! Thank you M&M’s meats for doing a SPECTACULAR BBQ! Thank you Hayley for keeping me as level headed as possible in the kerfuffle of excitement. Also, thank you for bringing Mike to do photography and Harrison to do filming! Thank you also to the numerous media reporters/photographers for coming out to see the spectacle. You guys rock!
Courtney, Lisa, Jocelyn and Sean THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE!! Whether you helped, watched, filmed, stopped by to say hey or just meandered…it meant the world to me to have my closest friends close by amuck all the stresses of organizing and coordinating; always grounding.
And finally, thank YOU for being the sole inspiration. YES would not be in existence without its fans and followers. We owe you the world for supporting us and coming out to the events we plan for YOU to enjoy YES at a whole new level.

I haven’t even started think about Christmas yet. I had to take my golf bag off of my snowboard bags. Where’s my gloves? What day is it again? How much snow?? The word of a potential October 8th POW day had my phone blowing up Friday morning the 7th. Calls, texts and emails were coming in from as far as Canada and Washington. Sure there was a blanket of new snow on the ground in Vail, Cali and I am sure half of the rest of the West, but 36 inches overnight and Wolf Creek is opening?
I admit, I have seen some big early snow, but I was skeptical. Either way though, there was no way I was gonna hear about how sick it was from someone else. Fast forward to 2:45am early Saturday, my wife just got home from work, but I was just waking up. By 4:00am, I had Mark Koelker in my truck and we were braving the seemingly endless twilight zone of insane snow and ice for 4 hours. Took a warm up run to see how deep it really was. One warm up was all we needed…
I will let the photos speak for themselves, the date was Oct. 8th, 2011 and Wolf Creek is the first to open in North America, on a Powder Day!! See you on the hill!!!
